I Tried bump’s Fried Chicken Donut

Hey hey everyone, it’s Mydondon here. Today I just happened to be wandering around the Yizhong Street night market when I spotted…

Wait a second~~ isn’t this the fried chicken donut that showed up in that bump video!? It actually opened a stall here at the Yizhong night market, so of course I had to give it a try!

I went to order at 16:24, but the staff told me ordering didn’t start until 16:30. After I placed my order at 16:30, I quietly waited around 18 minutes — honestly a bit long! I’m guessing it’s because they’re not totally used to the workflow yet, plus the staff are all new, which is why it took so long.

After waiting forever, the donut I’d been dreaming about finally landed in my hands. Here’s what it looks like.

(This is the fried chicken donut. Sorry, I was in a rush at the time, and being outdoors I couldn’t really take it out for a proper look.)

How should I put it? If this costs 80 NTD, then I’d say the size of the donut is a little bit off from what I had pictured — I’d originally expected it to look more like it did in the bump video.

The size was right, the look was right, but the only thing that shrank was the meat — just like a McDonald’s ad. Anyway, let’s get to the taste! On the first bite, you first get the flavor of the lettuce and sauce blending together, kind of like a tasty garden salad. When they assembled it, they used two kinds of sauce — one looked like yellow mustard, and the other I’d never seen before. While eating, you can clearly tell the mustard isn’t as sharp as the kind sold elsewhere; instead it’s fragrant and sweet and doesn’t steal the show. The other sauce has a slight sweetness a bit like red onion, plus a little of that fresh-vegetable chewiness. Honestly, it’s an experience I’ve never had before — really fresh and new.

The chicken’s flavor is fairly unprocessed — not salty at all, keeping its original taste. On top of that, the way it’s marinated locks the juices inside, so the moment you bite in, the whole thing bursts open. The donut is about the size of a palm — a little smaller than a Mister Donut one — sprinkled with white powder on top. At first I thought it was super-fine sugar, but it turned out it wasn’t; it doesn’t really have much flavor, yet it seems a touch sweet? I think it’s mainly there for decoration.

To wrap up: overall I think this fried chicken donut leans pricey, but there’s a reason for the price. What you’re getting isn’t as simple as a chicken cutlet you’d grab off the street stuffed into a donut — it’s actually thought through, and it doesn’t taste overly salty or feel heavy. Lastly, since most of the staff aren’t familiar with the workflow right now, the prep times run on the long side. If you really don’t want to wait half an hour for a single night-market snack, you might want to go on a quieter day.
