Okay okay, maybe that was a little too much… let’s get back to normal :> I’m finally back to keep this series going, so let me bring you the July 2023 Week 1 Recommended Playlist. This week… or maybe this month… or maybe even this whole season, I’m going to bring you a playlist full of the songs we miss most from the 2000s — the ones tucked away deep in your heart that you’ve heard before, but that have slowly faded from view as the Earth keeps spinning. There are so many of them that there’s no way to cram them all into one week of seven songs, so I’m just going to keep going until I can’t think of any more! Let’s get straight into it!

“Jonas Blue” — “Rise”
For this week’s first song, let’s talk about the hit single “Rise” by “Jonas Blue.” Hey~ have you ever had that feeling? Like a ray of morning sunlight warming you up, filling you with boundless strength and hope. “We’ll rise up high like the waves, we’ll rise up in spite of the ache” — these lyrics mean that we’ll rise as high as the waves, and even with the pain inside us, we’ll still rise up. To me, I feel this song wants us to understand that even when we face challenges and pain, we can still rise. Just like the waves, no matter how big the difficulties we run into, we can overcome them and welcome a better future. This song gives us strength and courage, and makes us believe in the abilities we already have.

“The Chainsmokers” & “Halsey” — “Closer”
The second song is “Closer,” a collaboration between “The Chainsmokers” and “Halsey.” Have you ever come across that irresistible kind of attraction? Like two stars drifting toward each other, destined to shine together? “So baby, pull me closer in the backseat of your Rover…” — “So baby, pull me closer in the backseat of your Rover.” This song describes a romance brimming with attraction and passion. Sometimes we meet a person who pulls us in like a magnet, impossible to resist. This song carries us into that feeling of desire and intimate connection, as if we’re sitting in the backseat of our lover’s car, clinging tightly to each other.

“OneRepublic” — “Counting Stars”
For the third song, I’m bringing you one called “Counting Stars,” performed by the hugely popular band “OneRepublic.” This song is famous for its upbeat rhythm and lyrics that get right to the heart. “Lately I’ve been, I’ve been losing sleep, dreaming about the things that we could be” — these lyrics stir up endless imagination about the future and inspire us to chase our dreams. In the quiet of the night, we often find ourselves caught up in all kinds of possibilities, longing to turn our dreams into reality.

“Shawn Mendes” — “Treat You Better”
Next up is one of my personal favorites, “Treat You Better” by “Shawn Mendes.” With its catchy melody and heartfelt lyrics, I couldn’t help but fall in love with it. “I know I can treat you better than he can” — I know I can treat you better than he can. This song expresses one person’s sincere love for another, and the willingness to treat them better than anyone else. It conveys a longing to give your loved one a better life and more care.

“MKTO” — “Classic”
The fifth song is the classic “Classic” by “MKTO” (get it? XD). This song is known for its upbeat rhythm and sunny melody that makes you can’t help but sway along. “You’re over my head, I’m out of my mind, thinking I was born in the wrong time” — these lyrics are full of nostalgia for bygone eras and a sense of helplessness about life today. Sometimes we feel out of step with our own time, longing to go back to those classic eras and enjoy that kind of innocence and freedom.

“Katy Perry” — “Last Friday Night”
Phew~ for the sixth song, I want to share “Last Friday Night” by “Katy Perry.” This song is hugely popular for its cheerful rhythm and party vibes. “There’s a stranger in my bed, there’s a pounding in my head, glitter all over the room, pink flamingos in the pool” — there’s a stranger in my bed, my head is pounding, glitter everywhere in the room, and… pink flamingos in the pool? This song paints a wild, unforgettable weekend party, calling to mind moments of revelry and wild adventures. Sometimes we need to relax, enjoy a carefree night, and let ourselves go.

If so, hurry and drop it in the comments below to let me know! Maybe next time you’ll see your song show up here! But since this is the first week I’m doing this, I’ll just have to add one more song myself.
I know I’ve recommended it before, but I still want to selfishly recommend “One Thing” by “One Direction.” With its upbeat rhythm and sweet lyrics, this song is beloved by young people — or rather, by our younger selves. “So get out, get out, get out of my head and fall into my arms instead” — so get out, get out, get out of my head, and fall into my arms instead. This song expresses a longing for someone, hoping they’ll leave your thoughts and fall into each other’s arms. It’s full of the sweetness and yearning of love, enough to make your heart flutter.
