Intro

Even if you’ve never watched Bocchi the Rock!, you’ve probably at least heard of it, because Bocchi the Rock! was last year’s dark horse, winning over the hearts of so many viewers.

To me, this show looks like a slice-of-life series on the surface, but it weaves in something extraordinary. Watching the main character step out of her comfort zone one little step at a time, walking the path she loves, gives you this “our kid is finally all grown up” kind of feeling. And Bocchi the Rock! is exactly that kind of anime…

Plot Summary and Spoilers

… (spoilers ahead) …

In everyday life, Hitori is someone who’s terrible at talking to people. Back in elementary school she had no friends at all and could only play by herself — even on field trips she’d just stay glued to the teacher’s side and let the teacher keep her company.

She originally only started practicing guitar so she’d have a better shot at making new friends. But even after becoming an incredibly skilled guitarist, she still couldn’t take that first step to get to know anyone. And because she never spoke up, other people didn’t dare approach her either — so in the end she stayed all alone.

And yet, online, she has a completely different identity. She’s a moderately famous “Guitar Hero” on the internet: as long as she doesn’t show her face, she can play with all the real skill that lives inside little lonely Hitori. That’s how Guitar Hero captured so many hearts.

The Hitori who was all alone in the real world gets discovered one day on her way home from school by Nijika, who was desperately searching for a guitarist — and that completely changes her life.

My Thoughts

I think Bocchi the Rock! is an anime that we introverts can really relate to. I always find myself nodding along with what’s going on inside Bocchi’s head — whether it’s not being able to say no when an extrovert asks her to do something, or not being able to speak up and ask for things herself, it hits me right where it hurts. And who says a cute girl can’t do cool things?

Okay, that wraps up my introduction. If you still haven’t seen this one, go check it out right now! I’m sure you’ll love it~
