That Girl Just Won’t Die No Matter What You Throw at Her — Anime Pick #3: BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense
Intro
Meow meow, hello everyone and welcome back! It’s Mydondon, successfully resurrected, and I’ve finally finished my final exams! And what better way to celebrate finishing finals than to kick back and chill, right? So I fired up Netflix, which had been gathering dust, and randomly picked an anime to watch. That’s when I stumbled across this show and somehow got completely hooked, finishing the whole thing in a single day! No joke, it’s that addictive.
It’s been a while since I last recommended a good show to you all, so today I want to recommend “Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense.” It’s an anime about friendship and hot-blooded adventure, and from start to finish you get to watch the main character grow and evolve step by step.
Plot Summary
(Mild spoilers ahead, roughly covering the first half of season one)
Maple was originally a girl who didn’t really play games, until one day her best friend invited her to try out a VR online game. Too polite to turn her down, she reluctantly agreed to her friend’s request. Fresh into the game, she had no idea what she was doing — all she knew was that in real life she really hates getting hurt. So! She did the one thing every brand-new player does: she dumped all her skill points into defense! What seemed like a foolish decision at first ended up producing results no one could have ever imagined.
(End of mild spoilers)
My Thoughts After Watching
For me, this anime isn’t one with an especially rich, layered plot, nor is the story all that innovative. It’s a bit of a riff on “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” — basically nonstop grinding and monster-bashing, grinding and monster-bashing — and yet it keeps you from being able to stop. At the same time, there are plenty of moments that will make those of us who’ve actually played video games smile knowingly. The whole series isn’t very long either; you can finish it in just over five hours, making it perfect if you’re looking for something to watch over a meal.
Alright, thanks for making it this far! If you enjoyed this post, feel free to drop a like and follow, and I’ll see you in the next one! Oh, and by the way, tomorrow’s post should be a recommendation for a cafe I visited a while back, so if that sounds interesting, stay tuned, my dear Mai-Mais!
