Yannick x Horii Uji Matcha: Worth It or Not? Unboxing 5 Yannick Desserts in One Go!

Intro

Meow meow, hello everyone, welcome back — it’s me, Mydondon! Long time no see~ Today I’m sharing the piping-hot, just-arrived Yannick fresh cream rolls. I’d heard online that this matcha roll is super matcha-y and delicious, so as a matcha lover I bought one to try without a second thought. These rolls are actually priced pretty high, so they can be a bit of a hard sell, but there’s a 24%-off group-buy section on the official website that’s perfect for rounding up your friends for a bulk order. But! But… I’m not sure if it’s because they’re out of stock or just way too popular, but this time’s collaboration matcha rolls on the official site have all switched to pre-order, and there’s no matcha option to pick in the group-buy section either. Maybe it’ll come back again later — so if you matcha-lovers can’t quite bring yourselves to buy, you can wait and see!

Order from the official website here: https://www.yannick.com.tw/shop/productlist?Item1=06&Item2=6-1

I really think this saves a lot — for example, the Uji Matcha Fresh Cream Roll is originally NT$630, and with the 24%-off group buy it's NT$479, saving you NT$151 right away.

1. Uji Matcha Pie ( originally NT$980 )

First up, let me introduce my personal top pick this time around! This Uji Matcha Pie is genuinely matcha-rich and bitter — basically my heart-fluttering darling. The pie has lots of different layers: the top is matcha powder paired with matcha cream, the middle is matcha jelly on top of matcha sponge cake, and finally there’s a layer of crispy, flaky tart shell. Matcha from top to bottom — how is it allowed to be this good~

Honestly, at first I was worried this pie might be so bitter it would get sickening, but after a bite I found that it isn’t at all! That’s because the only truly bitter part is the matcha jelly in the middle — the cake, the cream and everything else all add variations in texture, so it’s not boring to eat at all. If anything, it makes you want to keep going bite after bite.

This time the outer box has not only been redesigned, it’s also really thoughtfully done. Not only is the design on the outside of the box clean and good-looking, the inside even has the product’s concept written out, and there’s even a measuring guide line! The guide line is genuinely considerate — though I only noticed it after I’d finished cutting, so I still cut it ugly.

On top of that, this matcha roll is a real looker — here’s what it looks like!

Looks just like a chunk of earth, right! That gradient is really gorgeous — here’s another photo.

Aaaah it’s too cute~ I really couldn’t bear to cut into it. The cross-section is great too, and you can clearly see how super, super green it is.

It’s plain sponge cake rolled around matcha cream, and that matcha cream tastes a lot like the cream on the matcha tart. Overall it isn’t as bitter as the matcha tart above, but it’s still more matcha-y than the matcha products you can buy out there. If I really had to compare, I’d say it’s about twice as matcha-y as the matcha soft serve at FamilyMart, maybe even more. The cream’s own sweetness is mostly masked by the matcha flavor, but the sponge cake fills in that missing sweetness, so overall it’s tasty — though it can get a little monotonous if you eat too much. So I think you could cut it into small pieces to share with friends: one person having 1-2 slices alongside an unsweetened or lightly sweetened tea would be amazing!

3. Uji Matcha Basque Cheesecake ( originally NT$690 )

Next is the third item, the Uji Matcha Basque Cheesecake. It’s not as stunning as the previous two, but it’s still high-quality and really tasty.

I love making Basque cheesecake, but I’d never had a matcha-flavored one before, so I was really looking forward to this cheesecake this time. But… I cut it ugly and unevenly, so please bear with me~

This slice of Basque is actually already pretty perfect — the most beautiful a Basque gets is about like this. The top has the lovely baked-on pattern too, and it even faintly reflects the light. The filling is a slightly dark green, and you can faintly smell the cheese. Take one bite and you’ll find it’s different from the plain Basque cheesecake you’d imagine ( well, obviously ), with an added layer of matcha flavor. But the matcha seems to bring out the cheesecake’s original tartness, so there’s a hard-to-describe oddness to it.

But if you set the tartness aside, the cheesecake and matcha actually go together really well, the matcha flavor is strong, and it gives you that feeling where no amount is ever too much. The matcha taste slowly builds up in your mouth, and every soft, smooth bite of cream cheese gradually melts away on your tongue. That bitter-salty matcha-cheese flavor is something people who’ve never tried it just can’t picture — I recommend you go give it a try!

4. Original Fresh Cream Roll ( originally NT$380 )

( Just like the matcha roll, the inner box design is really pretty too — it has that Windows XP grassy-meadow vibe )

Next let’s try their signature Original Fresh Cream Roll. This roll is simple, yet it’ll have you going bite after bite. The outer wrap is a slightly sweeter classic sponge cake, paired with whipped fresh cream frosting — a classic, delicious cream roll. Not only is the outside smooth, it’s rolled beautifully on the inside too, and after you bite in you feel the soft, fluffy whipped cream frosting slowly deflating in your mouth. Even though it lacks matcha’s bitterness, it’s simple and flawless — recommended for those of you who don’t like matcha. Plus this roll’s price is much friendlier!

5. Chocolate Fresh Cream Roll

The Chocolate Fresh Cream Roll counts as one of the classics too — bittersweet chocolate sponge cake plus soft, fluffy buttercream, which gives it more layers than the traditional original roll. And I also noticed — not sure if it’s intentional or not — that one side has more cake while the other side has more cream. So you can enjoy the cream’s light sweetness first, then try that slightly bittersweet, dense chocolate sponge paired with the cream — it’s a whole different experience.

( Hey, this shot turned out really nice~ I’m good at this haha )

This one is kind of like an assortment pack — it has three different cream rolls inside. So if you’re indecisive, I think you could buy this one first to test the waters, and if you like it, take a whole roll home!

Wrap-up

In the end, I think their cream rolls are all really high-quality and great-looking — perfect for gifting and for photos. The only thing that isn’t pretty is the price. But if you factor in the ingredients, the cost of handmade production, and the related labor costs of shipping, it’s actually not hard to understand why they’re priced so high — so I still highly recommend them!

Okay! Thanks for watching, everyone. If you enjoyed it, feel free to hit that like and bookmark, and if you want to see more, you’re welcome to hit follow too! Lately updates have been a little slow because I’ve been busy with university stuff, but I promise I’ll make it up to you all in the future! See you next time~ Toodle-noodles~
