Meow meow everyone, welcome back~ It’s me, Mydondon! Today I’m taking you all to a shop I’ve been to a few times before, and one I’ve loved every single time, and that’s Fuquan Snowflake Ice (Fuquan Xuehuabing)~ Whenever I’m in the area I absolutely have to grab a bowl of their tasty ice before I can leave. But before I dive into the review, let me drop the shop’s info first.

Fuquan Snowflake Ice: the vibe inside

This place is different from your typical ice shop. Everything is really clean, and you can’t feel a single sticky spot on the tables. There are also plenty of seats. Actually, Fuquan Snowflake Ice doesn’t just sell their tasty snowflake ice. They also have iced tofu pudding (douhua) and teas, but this time we’ll focus on the snowflake ice. That said, the food doesn’t come out super fast, and since there really are a lot of customers, you’ll have to wait a while after ordering before you can dig into your ice.

(Besides snowflake ice, Fuquan also sells other tea-time treats) [ Please view on mobile for the best visual experience ]

Although I said it’s on the slow side, it actually wasn’t as long as you’d think. We waited about 12 minutes or so, and finally the ice arrived. So let’s give it a taste!

Matcha Red Bean Snowflake Ice $60

The first one I tried was the matcha red bean snowflake ice. No matter what the matcha product is, pairing it with sweet, sweet red beans always bumps the overall deliciousness up a notch, and of course this bowl was no exception. The matcha itself carries a slightly bitter, astringent note, and the snowflake ice is so silky that it melts away the moment it touches your tongue. Add the sweetness of the red beans to balance out the bitterness, and it makes me want to take one bite after another. There’s also condensed milk drizzled on top, which works much like the red beans, adding a bit of variety to the flavor and giving the bowl an extra milky aroma. Honestly, it’s just too satisfying.

Mango Milk Snowflake Ice $75

The mango snowflake ice is delicious too. Just like the matcha one, it’s mango on mango, but the mango they pick is the kind with a slight tartness. The base is a snowflake ice that’s a touch sweet with a hint of milkiness, and it tastes great just like that. But if you want, you can add on a scoop of ice cream for a bit more flavor variety. After this visit, though, my take is: don’t add it~ Because a scoop costs 15 NT and it’s a tiny little thing, so the value is on the low side.

Peanut Snowflake Ice $70

Last but not least, let’s try the peanut snowflake ice. In short, the peanut snowflake ice is peanut, peanut, peanut~ The ice uses a peanut base and then gets a lethal dose of peanuts piled on top. Overall it’s not as wow or as special as the previous two; instead it’s simple but brutal, hitting you with a ton of peanut goodness from start to finish. I thought it’d be kind of boring to eat, but it turned out fine, because the crunchy peanuts pair really well with the soft, fluffy ice and it never feels cloying.

Alright~ thanks for reading, let’s wrap it up! Of these three, my personal top pick is the mango ice. The tart-sweet mango plus the milky, fluffy ice, finished with a bite of super-sweet ice cream, really hits the spot. The matcha with red bean and condensed milk isn’t creative, but it’s a timeless, can’t-go-wrong classic. And the peanut fluffy ice is tasty too. The flavor isn’t all that rich, but the variety in texture keeps it from getting boring. Finally, if you made it all the way here, go ahead and hit like and save!
