The FamilyMart Slushie You Really Shouldn’t Miss

A few days ago I was at FamilyMart absolutely craving something cold, but I’d grown so used to those rock-hard ice bars in the freezer that I really wanted to try something new. So I went for FamilyMart’s slushie (kūbīnshā), and honestly? One sip and I was hooked. It got to the point where I felt like I had to have one every single day, to the point where my wallet was begging me to stop! But I still couldn’t resist grabbing this seemingly ordinary yet surprisingly great slushie.

How you should eat it!

If you’re reading this and the clerk hasn’t microwaved it yet, stop them, quick! Microwaving it ruins this delicious slushie. When it’s not microwaved, there’s a layer of white on top, and that white ice cream is absolutely amazing — soft and smooth just like real ice cream. It tastes kind of like milk ice cream, but without the heavy dairy flavor.

I think the best way to enjoy this slushie is to take a little bit of the ice cream together with the tart-and-sweet slush. The combination of pomelo and Jin Xuan tea made me expect a sugary little dessert, but after a bite I realized it’s not actually that sweet — instead you can really taste the Jin Xuan tea. I’m guessing the fruit pulp is the real deal, because there’s a slight icy-crystal texture to it, as if the pulp itself had been frozen. And there’s quite a lot of pulp, too, which makes it feel like a genuinely generous cup of slushie.

Overall, it’s a slushie with a wonderfully varied texture. The only downside is that after eating the slush for a while you can’t really taste the ice cream anymore — but all in all it’s a commendable cup of slushie.
