I Finally Tried FamilyMart’s Chicken Rice Onigiri — Was It Worth It?
This rice ball is always sitting there on the convenience store shelf, but somehow I never pick it. Today, though, I figured I’d give it a shot and finally find out whether it’s any good.

My Thoughts After Eating It
The first thing I noticed was the rice ball’s biggest flaw: all the chicken is bunched up in the center, so when you bite into the pointy corners you only get plain rice and the scent of seaweed. On the plus side, you really do get to appreciate the natural saltiness of the nori that way — but honestly it’s a bit too plain. Next time I should take a bigger bite to actually reach the tasty rice in the middle.

The rice in the middle tastes like the kind of not-too-salty soy sauce you’d get in sukiyaki, minus the sweetness, with a faint hint of chicken broth. Pair that with the shredded chicken and it’s honestly top-notch. It’s a little weaker than the chicken rice I’ve had before — the flavor is on the milder side — but it makes for a nice light rice ball. If you’re one of those Mai-Mai folks still wondering what to have for breakfast tomorrow, give this one a try. The starch portion runs a bit high, but the fillings are whole foods, so it won’t weigh you down as much!
