Wonka: Every Wonderful Thing in the World Begins with a Dream

Intro
Meow meow, hello everyone, welcome back! It’s Mydondon, and it’s time for our Friday movie night again! Today we’re watching a musical film that’s been getting rave reviews lately – Wonka, the prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Even for a big kid like me who has never actually seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, finishing this one left me feeling like the whole thing was pure magic. If you’re still on the fence, I really recommend giving it a watch! So let’s get started!

Wonka – Plot Overview
Willy Wonka is a young man who’s a magician AND has an extra special talent for making chocolate!? His dream is to open a chocolate shop of his own in a bustling city, so he can share the chocolate he’s best at making with everyone in the world. Wonka believes that the moment he opens his very own shop, someone deeply important to him will appear right before his eyes.
On his very first day stepping off the dock and starting to explore the city, his kind heart (plus a string of other things) burns through all 12 silver coins he’d brought with him. But being the talented guy that he is, he isn’t worried in the slightest, because “in this city, anyone has a chance to succeed – as long as they have talent and work hard, or so they say.” That line comes from the film’s opening number, “A Hatful of Dreams.”
Because all his money had been “stolen,” he had no choice but to spend the night in some corner of the city – and that’s exactly when he ran into Bleacher, who happened to be passing by. The kind-hearted Bleacher took Wonka to a laundry-cum-cheap-boardinghouse run by a Mrs. Scrubitt he knew, so he could stay the night. Naturally, the cornered Wonka had no option but to tag along – otherwise, if he’d really slept out on the street until morning, he probably would have frozen into a popsicle.

After a good night’s sleep in the cozy boardinghouse, he set up shop in the town square selling his pride and joy – “hoverchocs,” chocolates that make you float. They caused a huge sensation across the city, and everyone was dying to get their hands on such a fun product. But somehow the three chocolate tycoons who’d long held a monopoly in town came barging in. Not only did they refuse to praise his work, they sneered that his chocolate was all flash and no substance, that chocolate should be kept as simple as possible. On top of that, someone tipped off the local police chief, and all the money he’d earned that day got confiscated. After a full day of toil with nothing to show for it, Wonka had no idea that something even worse was waiting for him behind his door back at the boardinghouse…

Wonka – My Thoughts After Watching
For me, after catching up on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and then watching this new film, I think the biggest difference is that the musical numbers never feel out of place here. In the earlier film, the songs seemed to follow a set pattern – they’d start singing right after each kid got “taken out,” which made things feel a bit disconnected, like you’d suddenly been yanked out of the story. But this film doesn’t give you that feeling at all. Every number lands just right, advancing the plot while also giving you a great song to listen to – and they’re super catchy too~

The way the story is laid out also makes it really comfortable to follow along. Maybe it’s because the plot itself is simple and there aren’t too many characters, so for a face-blind, brain-off-while-watching person like me, it never felt stressful, and there weren’t a lot of “hint-heavy” plot points to puzzle over. Lastly, the content is full of little jokes that make you grin, which keeps the story from getting boring. All those little laughs make the whole thing feel more lively and fun – so I ask you, why not hurry up and go catch this one at the theater?
